If you’re not quite sure how to make a scarecrow, here are some ideas!
We’ve based this on a 2m (6ft) scarecrow, but yours can be smaller – just adjust your measurements.
You will need:
3 sticks, bamboo canes or old broom handles to make the frame. They need to be quite sturdy to hold your scarecrow up
1 about 2m (6ft) long for the body
1 about 1m (3ft) long for the arms
1 about 30cm (1ft) long for the waist
Some old clothes – shirts, jumpers, jackets, trousers, dresses, skirts, hats, gloves, scarves – whatever you can find.
Something to make your scarecrow’s head – we suggest a pair of tights (it doesn’t matter if old or new!). You can also use a balloon that you can paper mache, or chicken wire.
Plenty of string or wire.
Materials to stuff your scarecrow with – think straw, newspaper, leaves, old pillows, cushions etc.
Firstly, you need to make the frame:
Tightly secure the 1m stake to the 2m stake in a cross shape with string or wire. Leave 15-30cm at the top for the head
Then secure the smaller 30cm stake about half way down
Then you need to make your head:
Cut a leg off the tights and stuff the foot end (e.g. straw, newspaper, leaves etc)
Tie some string around the loose end to keep everything in place
You can decorate the face and add hair etc at this point or do it later
Tie the head at the top of the frame
To make the body:
Put the clothes you are using on to the frame and tie any sleeve or trouser cuffs to the frame so your fillings don’t fall out
Stuff the body, legs and arms
Then all you need to do is add a design to your scarecrow, add accessories and give him/her a face – think about how you can use the harvest theme….
You can make animal scarecrows too, but remember you will need more sticks for your frame.
Lots of luck and we look forward to seeing your wonderful creations!
